WHAT IS REPAIR SPECIFICATION?

FAA REPAIR SPECIFICATION
EXPLAINED

A repair specification is an FAA-approved document that defines the methodology for performing a major repair on a specific aircraft part or component. Unlike a Form 337 field approval, a repair specification is reusable — it authorizes the same repair on multiple articles without requiring a new FAA approval each time.

WHAT IS MAJOR REPAIR

WHEN A REPAIR SEC IS REQUIRED

A major repair is a repair that, if improperly performed, could appreciably affect airworthiness — structural strength, performance, powerplant operation, or flight characteristics. Major repairs not performed according to accepted practices require FAA approval via Form 337 or a repair specification.

REPAIR SPEC VS. FORM 337

REUSABLE VS. ONE-TIME APPROVAL

A Form 337 field approval is issued once for one specific article. A repair specification is issued once and can be applied to any article of the same part number going forward. For MROs performing the same repair repeatedly, a repair spec eliminates the ongoing approval burden and reduces per-unit cost significantly.

COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITY

FROM REPAIR SEC TO PMA

A repair specification authorizes your facility to perform the repair. A PMA authorizes you to manufacture and sell the repaired article to any operator. If your repair process is proven and commercially valuable, the conversion from repair spec to PMA unlocks the entire aftermarket — not just your current customers.

WHAT WE COVER

FAA REPAIR SPECIFICATION
SERVICES

From single-component repair specs to full MRO-to-PMA conversion programs — our DER-led team handles the entire approval process.

WHO WE WORK WITH

Any MRO or manufacturer with a major repair that needs FAA authorization beyond accepted practices.

01

TEST & COMPUTATIONS (T&C)

Full substantiation packages via comparative analysis and direct test — aligned to AC 21.303 and AC 33-8 for propulsion components.

02

IDENTICALITY

Licensing and direct identicality showings — we determine the fastest compliant path and execute it correctly the first time.

03

DER FORM 8110-3 APPROVALS

In-house DER with Part 23, 25, and 33 delegations. We provide the engineering approval that closes the loop with the FAA.

04

MRO REPAIR-TO-PMA CONVERSION

If your facility has a proven repair process, we assess and convert it into a marketable, FAA-approved PMA product.

05

ENGINE & POWERPLANT COMPONENTS

Specialized capability in propulsion parts — turbine components, fuel system hardware, accessory gearboxes, bearings.

05

QUALITY SYSTEM GUIDANCE

We help align your production quality system to Part 21.137 production approval requirements — no rebuild, just the right scoping.

THE BIGGER OPPORTUNITIES

FROM REPAIR SPEC
TO PMA PRODUCTS

Most MROs don't realize their proprietary repair process is sitting on a commercial opportunity. A repair specification gives you authority to perform the repair — but only within your facility, only for your current customers.

A Parts Manufacturer Approval converts that process into a product. Once you hold the PMA, you can manufacture and sell the repaired article to any operator, any MRO, any airline that needs it worldwide. The same technical work you've already done becomes a revenue stream that scales beyond your current customer base.

If your facility has been running a repair process successfully — and the engineering data already exists to support it — the gap to PMA is almost always narrower than operators assume. We've guided MROs through this conversion repeatedly. We know exactly where the gaps are before the FAA finds them.

CONVERSION STEPS

STEP 01

TURNKEY PACKAGE DEVELOPMENT

Review existing repair data, drawings, and quality records to determine what's already PMA-ready and what gaps exist.

STEP 02

DRAWING FORMALIZATION

Translate repair work instructions and tribal knowledge into formal engineering drawings with DER sign-off.

STEP 03

SUBSTANTIATION FRAMING

Reframe repair data as design substantiation under AC 21.303 — comparative analysis or direct test and computations path.

STEP 04

QUALITY SYSTEM SCOPING

Align your existing Part 145 quality system to Part 21.137 production approval requirements — expansion, not rebuild.

STEP 05

FAA SUBMISSION & PMA APPROVAL

Complete, DER-approved package submitted to the FAA ACO. Direct coordination through to final PMA issuance.

CORE VALUES

HOW WE
OPERATE

Repair specification and PMA conversion are niche capabilities. Here's what we bring to yours.

PROPULSION COMPONENT SPECIALISTS

We don't do avionics, structures, or general airframe repairs. Every repair specification we develop involves propulsion components — turbine engines, fuel systems, engine accessories, and powerplant hardware. That depth directly applies to your program.

01

DER AUTHORITY IN-HOUSE

Repair specifications require DER-approved engineering data. Our in-house DER holds active Part 23, 25, 27, 29, and 33 delegations. You get the engineering approval that closes the loop with the FAA without coordinating with an external DER or waiting in someone else's queue.

02

REPAIR-TO-PMA EXPERTISE

Most certification firms can develop a repair spec. Far fewer can assess whether it should be converted to a PMA and execute that conversion efficiently. We've guided MROs through both paths — and we can tell you early which one makes commercial sense for your situation.

03

FAA REVIEWER PERSPECTIVE

Our founder worked as an FAA engineer — which means we know what a repair specification needs to contain before the FAA reviewer ever opens the package. That insider knowledge prevents the comment cycles that delay approvals and add cost to every engagement.
